What Broadcom's Bahrain VMware Notice Means for You
On 30 October 2026, Broadcom said VMware Cloud on AWS in AWS me-south-1, the Bahrain region, is still disrupted. AWS has not provided a service restoration ETA, and it indicated the next update will be in early 2027. If a system you rely on lives in only one cloud region, this notice is worth a quiet look.
I help business owners with infrastructure: Linux, Windows, AWS, Kubernetes, and mail. When a region stays unavailable, the useful work is a clear map of where your systems live and which copy you can start from. An Able Retainer for that planning is $799/mo, eight hours of senior production time, planned with you. Email greg@ableadmins.com, or start with infrastructure services.
What Broadcom reported
Broadcom's notice at 18:30 UTC on 30 October 2026 says the impact began at 14:22 UTC. VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC deployments in Middle East (Bahrain), me-south-1, are impacted by the ongoing AWS regional service disruption described in AWS's 15 September 2026 update. SDDC means software-defined data center: your VMware environment running on AWS.
The affected components Broadcom listed are VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC in Middle East (Bahrain), HCX, VMware Cloud Flex Storage, and VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts. HCX moves workloads between sites. Flex Storage is VMware's storage for that cloud. Outposts is AWS hardware that sits in your building and stays tied to AWS.
The Register, citing the AWS Health Dashboard, reports AWS said anything hosted exclusively in the Bahrain Region (me-south-1) remains inaccessible. It quoted AWS: the damage "spanned multiple Availability Zones and exceeded what our regional and multi-AZ services are designed to withstand," and AWS is "unable to restore access to the resources and data hosted exclusively in this Region."
An Availability Zone is a separate group of data centers inside a region. Multi-AZ means the service sits in more than one of those groups.
The Register also reports AWS cannot restore resources and data hosted only in UAE Availability Zone mec1-az2. Recovery work continues for regional resources and for mec1-az1 and mec1-az3. Most customers restarted in other Regions from backups or from data that remained accessible.
What the tracker still shows
Control Plane's tracker, last updated 21 October 2026, still lists me-south-1 (from 2 March 2026) and me-central-1 (from 1 March 2026) as ongoing. The tracker says AWS declared both unable to reliably support customer applications and said some data stored only in those regions cannot be restored.
The same tracker says 9 of AWS's 14 major outages since 2020 hit us-east-1, and that an application running in one region, or depending on services anchored in one region, goes down with that region. That second point is the one to remember. The same idea covers me-south-1 and us-east-1.
What this means for your business
Customers who restarted, The Register reports, did it in other Regions from backups or from data that remained accessible. They had a copy that was still reachable.
A second availability zone in the same region is still that region. It helps with a single site failure. AWS says the Bahrain damage exceeded what multi-AZ services are designed to withstand. Anything hosted exclusively in me-south-1 remains inaccessible. Resources and data hosted only in mec1-az2 cannot be restored, while recovery continues for mec1-az1, mec1-az3, and regional resources.
If VMware Cloud on AWS in Bahrain is part of your stack, use Broadcom's list as your inventory: the SDDC, HCX, Flex Storage, and Outposts.
Checks you can make this week
- Write down the region for each system you would miss. Include the database, file storage, mail, and the application your customers use.
- Note where the backup lives. A backup in the same region as the live system is offline when that region is offline.
- Look for anchors. Your site can depend on a database, a DNS record, or a license check that lives in one region. DNS turns a web name into a server. When that region stops, the site stops with it.
- If something important is pinned only to us-east-1, add it to the list. The tracker says 9 of AWS's 14 major outages since 2020 hit that region.
- If your only copy is in me-south-1, or only in mec1-az2, plan from a backup you can open. AWS has said those exclusive copies cannot be restored. Broadcom says the next AWS update is early 2027.
- Open one backup far enough to read a real file. That check tells you the copy is usable.
How Able can help
I will look at where your systems run, where the copies live, and what you would start from if a region stayed dark. Linux, Windows, AWS, Kubernetes, and mail are part of that work when they carry the business.
The Able Retainer is $799/mo, eight hours a month of senior production time, planned with you. Email greg@ableadmins.com or call (832) 977-1356. Begin on the infrastructure services page.
